DECAY


Volunteering at City Farm this season has been really rewarding. It’s amazing to watch a plant go through it’s cycle of life starting from a seed, being very carefully nurtured and finally harvested. Pulling up all of the tomato plants is a brutal task. It sets a nostalgic mood, and though I cannot put my finger on the reasoning behind this, I can accept it. It is tragic, yet beautiful. We churn up the ground in preparation for the new generation ahead, and pay our dues to these brittle stalks that once gave us an abundance of alluringly colored and deliciously juicy tomatoes. This act of mending to the garden, becomes an incredible example of reciprocity: giving and receiving, giving and receiving. The fall harvest is like having to say goodbye to a dear friend only to meet new ones.
